The single-seat Hawker Fury biplane fighter designed by Sydney Camm in 1927. had passed out of front-line service with the RAF by mid-1939. and those still in use as trainers were grounded by 1940.

The Yugoslav Aircraft industry was, for the most part, loated and destroyed during the subsequent occupation, and many skilled personnel lost their lives, but before the end of 1944. a determined effort was being made to ressurect the industry and the Ikarus, Rogožarski and Zmaj concerns were soon undertaking overhaul work. An ambitious programme was initiated for the design and construction of various types of training, liason and sport aircraft as vell as a fighter S-49A.

Ikarus S-49C second version 1/72

Three years after the S-49A, the completely metal version S-49C was produced. Same design team as for Ik-3 and S-49A created new fighter, fighter/bomber and reconnaisance aircraft powered by French built Hispano Suiza Hs 12 Z-17 engine.

Prototype of new training aircraft for Royal Yugoslav Air Force flew for the first time at the beginning of 1937. Airplane was high wing monoplane constructed by Sima Milutinovic.
