The IK-L1 prototype was delivered from the Ikarus factory at the end of 1934., but the first flight was on April 1935. flown by Captain Leonid Bajdak. First and second flight was uneventful, but on the third flight, on April 24. the aircraft crashed, due the craftsmanship error on the starboard wing fabric covering.

Three years after the S-49A, the completely metal version S-49C was produced. Same design team as for Ik-3 and S-49A created new fighter, fighter/bomber and reconnaisance aircraft powered by French built Hispano Suiza Hs 12 Z-17 engine.
