Ikarus S-49C second version 1/72
Three years after the S-49A, the completely metal version S-49C was produced. Same design team as for Ik-3 and S-49A created new fighter, fighter/bomber and reconnaisance aircraft powered by French built Hispano Suiza Hs 12 Z-17 engine. That powerful engine required total reconstruction in the airframe and use of metal construction. By some sources, totaly was produced157 S-49C in Ikarus and 70 in Soko-Mostar factory (first and second version). Armement is also improved, by using two /four HVAR rocket launchers under the each wing, centraly mounted cannon MG-151 20 mm cal. and two Colt Browning M2 12,7 mm machine guns. For ground attack role, two underwing bomb pylons for 50 kg each are mounted. During nine years, from 1952. till 1961. Ikarus S-49C served in various Yugoslav Air Force units as interceptor, fighter, fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. New, Jet age of aviation pushed back the last of the IK/S family aircraft from the sky. Production of the S-49C was finaly phased out during the 1953/1954. Only one, S-49C (second version) No 2400/400 is preserved in Yugoslav Aviation Museum exposition. Structural data: Monoc ocque metal fuselage structure, metal wing and tail structure, with ailerons and flaps also metal sheet covered. Fully retractable main and rear undercarriage.
